Pirate Continuous or Present Continuous?

Formula

The positive form:

Usually students of English use the –ing form of the main verb, but ignore am/is/are.
We know what happens
: Ha-ha-ha!

Still, sometimes they manage to use am/is/are, but it is so effort-consuming that they do not have strength left for the –ing-ending of the main verb. The result is still the same: : Ha-ha-ha! Most typically people tend to forget about either of these forms. Don’t! Otherwise you will hear a hyena-like laughter of a pirate (: Ha-ha-ha!).

Contracted form

I am working

He/she/it is working

You/we/they are working

I’m working

He’s/she’s/it’s working

You’re/we’re/they’re working

In the negative form we simply add the negative particle NOT between the auxiliary and main verbs:

He/she/it is not working

You/we/they are not working

I’m not working

He isn’t/she isn’t/it isn’t working

You aren’t/we aren’t/they aren’t working

In general (Yes or No) questions we start with the auxiliary verb (am/is/are), which is followed by the subject and then the –ing form of the main verb:

General question

Short answer (positive)

Short answer (negative)

Am I working?

Is he/she/it working?

Are you/we/they working?

Yes, you are.

Yes, he/she/it is.

Yes, you/we/they are.

No, you are not./No, you aren’t.

No, he/she/it is not./No, he/she/it isn’t.

No, you/we/they are not./

No, you/we/they aren’t.

In special questions (starting with a question word) we put the question word first, and then use the auxiliary, subject and V-ing.

How am I working?

Why is he smiling?

Where is she eating?

Who are you calling?

Which computer are we using?

What are we watching?

Usage

We use the Present continuous:

1) When we talk about something happening exactly now: I’m doing my homework now/at the moment/right now.

2) When the action is happening at a time around the present (these days, these weeks, etc.), though not necessarily right now: These days you are watching too much TV. You should be more physically active instead!

3) When the situation we are describing is changing: Computers are getting smaller and smaller.

4) When we refer to a temporary, not constant, situation: It’s a really busy period of time at work. I’m leaving my office no earlier than 8 pm these days.

5) When we use the word always to indicated we are annoyed or unhappy: He is always saying silly things like that!

6) When we talk about fixed plans or arrangements in the future:  We are meeting them at 2.30 tomorrow.

Most importantly, the present continuous consists of 2 parts: the auxiliary verb be in its forms (am/is/are) + the –ing form of the main verb. Otherwise: : Ha-ha-ha!

Spelling rules

When we add –ing to verbs, there might be some changes.

1) If a verb ends in one –e, we usually drop it and add –ing.

come

drive

have

write

coming

driving

having

writing

2) If a verb ends in a single consonant (rob, swim, plan, etc.) which is preceded by ONE!!! vowel (a, e, i, o, u), we double the final consonant in order to preserve the closed syllable pronunciation of the preceding vowel. However, we DO NOT double a consonant preceded by several vowels (look, read, feed, etc.) Also, for the doubling to take place, the last syllable must be stressed. If it isn’t, we do not double the last consonant: develop – developing (NOT developping), because the stress is not on the last syllable: de-VE-lop. In British English, however, we double the last letter l automatically, even if it’s not stressed. In American English this doubling doesn’t occur: TRAvel – TRAvelling (BrE), but TRAveling in American English.

run

sit

sob

stop

running

sitting

sobbing

stopping

3) We NEVER drop –y when –ing is added! However, if a verb ends in –ie, we transform it into –y before –ing.

cry

play

crying

playing

die

lie

dying

lying
